Quote #3

[Pi:] "Why do people move? What makes them uproot and leave everything they've known for a great unknown beyond the horizon? Why climb this Mount Everest of formalities that makes you feel like a beggar? Why enter this jungle of foreignness where everything is new, strange and difficult?

The Answer is the same the world over: people move in the hope of a better life."(Ch 29)

How has Pi's character "moved" or changed throughout the first part of the novel? What is Pi going to miss most about India?

  1. He was strictly Hindu at the beginning and was ignorant towards other religions. Later on he met Father Martin and Jesus Christ. He then became open to all kinds of religion and took suggestions as help. When he met Mr. Kumar he became Islam And became even more religious.

He will more then likely miss Mr. Kumar and his religious teachers. He will also miss all of the animals at the zoo because he grew up with them and has always got comfort from them.

  2. Pi has been through a lot, and is now about to go through more. He will miss all of these great adventures. I think he will miss his friends the most, on his religious journey Pi has met many people, a priest,an Inam, and an Atheist. He loves them all, even though he disagrees with some of their thoughts. Of course Pi's suffering has just begun, but when he invited all of his friends and family to the park to discuss his religious beliefs and interests he got the opposite of what he expected, he got three angry priests, and a judging family.

  4. Pi has changed alot. His opinion about god has changed, by adding new beliefs not so much changing his old ones. He's definatley grown in faith, he is more and more comitted to god everyday. Pi will miss all his friends, and family in India, the food, his house, the cultural. He will mostly miss the sense of home, and security that only India can give. He will also miss all his teachers, the people have shaped his life, and beliefs

  6. Pi is "moved" or have changed is just by his point of view of life. Also wanting to a chance to start all over in life. I think he just has a new approach towards everything because he is more open minded to new things and get to have new experiences. And wants to have a better chance in life and is wanting to start all over

"The Answer is the same the world over: people move in the hope of a better life."

Pi will miss a lot of things from India because that is like his hometown and were he grew up and is use to everything that is there. So he will probably miss everything.Because he is going to places that isnt anything like it so he is going to adapt to these new places he is going to be.

  7. He has adapted just about every major religion except for Judaism.
He has also learned much about wild animals and there general behavior pattern. He also learned how to deal with atheists. all of these things affect how he thinks and what he'll do

  8. I think Pi is going to miss mostly the culture, friends, and the journey to India. He will probably mostly miss the Zoo and Mr.Kumar and Mr.Kuamr.

Usually you move country's, or states because of your parents. India was the state he was born in, it's his hometown. India was the place were he realized he was Hindu, Muslim and Christian. Now Pi has to start over again. He has to meet new friends and start another journey across the country, but everything happens for a reason, and I'm pretty sure Pi now's that this is happening because it's meant to be.

  9. Pi has changed a lot since the beginning of the book. First, he's matured. In the beginning he was all kiddish and didn't know anything different. All he knew was that he was Hindu and he loved animals. Pi was not introduced to other religions till he was fifteen. This religion was Christianity and this is where Pi began to change.

After A couple of days of going to the church Pi realized that he wanted to be Christian and Hindu. Then when he turned sixteen he went to the mosque. At first he thought it was an odd place, but then he got to know it and he thought it was a really cool religion and it was also peaceful. Now Pi is Christian, Hindu and Muslim.

I think that Pi is going to miss the culture, friends and the zoo. He's probably gonna miss The three wise men and Mr.Kumar. They made the biggest difference in his life. I also think that he's going to miss India all together because he spent his whole life there. I think that him moving will bring new adventures for Pi.

  10. How Pi has changed throughout the story is that he is more outgoing and had his curiosity has grow. Just like at the beginning of the story he was only a part of one religion, Hinduism and that was all he believed in. Now that his curiosity has grown he has joined two more religions Christianity and Muslim.

I think that Pi is mostly going to miss all of his religious teachers like Father Martin. He is also going to miss the zoo that taught him about what is dangerous and what is not.

  11. Pi has changed into a person that has to start all over. Make a new life and new friends. Canida and India to him are like two completly differant worlds in his eyes. Leaving India for him must be like being reborn. He will no nothing of Canida or its people. I think Pi will miss his old life, his teachers, his religious teachers most of all because his conection to religion is so great. He will be leaving behind an entire life in India, and all that will be left is memories. He will miss the tempals and landscape of his old home, but a great adventure has come to him, one that he must accomplish.

  12. Pi has changed in many ways throughtout the book. He was strictly believing in Hinduism, and then he opened his heart to other religions and found a deeper love. He's starting to have an open mind about everything. Right now, he's having a little trouble finding a reason why his family had to move. But they say everything happens for a reason, so I'm sure there's a reason he's moving.

I think Pi will mostly miss everything that has happened in India. He was born and raised there, so there's a lot of memories that happened during that amount of time. When you move, you don't just miss the people there, you pretty much everything you're leaving. Pi's scared of leaving what he knows and going somewhere without an idea of what to expect. (Besides being cold all the time.)

  13. Pi will really love his adventure to Canada. During his journey, Pi will see a various amount of things in his wonderful journey. Pi will miss all of his extraordinary friends and teachers, but pi will start a new life and will love it.How Pi's character "moved"/changed throughout the first part of the novel is because pi keeps on discovering new religions.

    ReplyDelete
  14. In the first part of the book, Pi is changed when he starts to explore different religions and also when is exposed to different opinions on religion.

What I think he is going to miss the most about India when he leaves is his friends, family, but most of all, his sense of security. I say this because in India he knows where everything is, he knows everybody, he knows how to get places, and he feels comfortable about his religious exploration. Now he is going to a place that he has never been to, never seen, never been exposed to their culture, never seen what food they eat, etc. In the book he talks he talks about how that an animal doesn't like the unknown, or something unfamiliar.

"A herd of roe-dee in a European zoo stept of their corral when the gate was left open. Frightened by visitors, the deer bolted for the nearby forest, which had it's own herd of wild roe-deer and could support more. Nonetheless, the zoo roe-deer quickly returned to their corral."

Why can't this behavior be applied to humans? I mean, what if someone left you in a random part of your neighborhood? Where would you go? You would probably walk back to your house. Pi is most likely unsure of how he is going to fit into this new society, and is possibly looking for something familiar. Seeking out some place where he feel secure. Like an animal. Or maybe just like you and I.

  15. Pi has always been a free person. He has experienced many different religions. He has done things he would have never been able to do with his parents.

Meeting all the different gods, he now knows that he could believe in anything. He will always believe in religion, no matter what setting. He has always been an adult type of person. He has never needed any help from his parents. He may learn lesson's here and there but that is just more knowledge for him. He can do anything he sets his mind to.

I think Pi is going to miss his "mentors" also know as the three wise men. They have given Pi knowledge like no other teacher has given Pi. Without them Pi would have know so much in life. He will also miss his biology teacher Mr. Kumar who helped him so much through his life.

It's a new beginning for Pi and he will soon learn Canada will be good for him.

  16. He's constantly around people, and while being around them, people has changed his perspective on religion, animals, and other people.
Mr. Kumar shows him that not all people believe in god as the book proves in chapter 7:
'"Religion?" Mr. Kumar grinned broadly. "I don't believe in religion. Religion is darkness."'
But, of course, people do not always believe in the same thing, as the book suggests in chapter 17:
'Love. That was Father Martian's answer.'
    In chapter 19:
'His eyes lit up. "It is about the Beloved," he replied.'
In Hinduism, it's about becoming one with the immortal Brahman, which is the all powerful Hinduism god. Pi's father also has taught him a very powerful lesson about how life will defend itself no matter the circumstances, even if that involves hurting or killing you.
But even in his world of dangers, moving will still make him want to come back to his home of people and land, which happens to be what he will miss most while at Canada.

  17. people constantly move because they are trying to find a better life somewhere else. In Pi's family case they wanted to get more money because the zoo want paying enough. job relocation mostly though. however the way Pi moved was that his mind changed from only believing about his religion, Hinduism, to other religions.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Pi has changed through the first part of the book in a lot of ways. He's much more open-minded now. Before he couldn't have just learned about other religions and begin to believe in them. He would have never even dared try to learn about another religion because hes always been brought up to be a Hindu.

I think Pi's gonna miss India because its his hometown and he lived there his whole childhood. I think what hes gonna miss most are the people that have changed him throughout his life in India. Like Mr. Kumar, the 3 religious men and all of the other friends and family he had there. Cause those are the people that have given him memories and made him who he is. But also just India itself, the food, the culture and the zoo.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think Pi has changed because he has met new people that had different beliefs. like Mr.Kumar, an aithiest, The Priest, a christian, etc. He has also been under influence by his parents, the priests, and the temples.

Pi will be sad to leave his home town India. However I think he is excited to go live in a new place and meet new people. I also think he might find a new religion. What I think he will miss the most is probably the zoo, because He has been there all his life and I'm sure it was fun living there.

  20. Pi has "moved" different Philosophies in the book. He is now apart of three different religions! We found that he is very open minded and he wants to be apart of everything! He enjoys learning about different cultures. He is also going through the stage where he is misunderstood. No one gets why he is so interested in different religions, but that doesn't stop him.

Also, many people help Pi move. For example Father Martin, got him into christianity. He told him the story about Jesus(chapter 17) and all about LOVE. Pi is easily affected.

India is where his memories are. It is where we was born, and a lot of his life was spent. It is going to be hard to leave his culture and start a new life totally opposite from India. He will miss all his friends and family. Mr.Kumar will be hard to leave. He is not only Pi's favorite teacher, but a person he can trust. A friend. Moving to Canada is a fresh start, a new beginning. He will have many adventures coming soon! Good, and BAD.

  21. Pi has changed a lot during the first part of this novel! At the beginning of the book he was very content on being a Hindu and didn't want anything to do with other religions. "The universe makes sense to me through Hindu eyes."

Later on in the book Pi became more affiliated with other religions. He learned about christianity, the muslim religion, and some more about Hinduism. Now Pi is a Christian, Muslim, and Hindu! After becoming a part of all three religions Pi was later faced with the fact that some people only wanted him to be one religion in chapter 23. But after a while Pi's parents said he could be all three.

What I think Pi will miss the most about India is his memories. He had practically spent his whole life there! His family owned a zoo, he went to school, he had Mr. Kumar, he had friends, and family in India. Moving to Canada will be an adventure for his family and will give them a fresh start with their new lives away from India.

  22. Pi has moved in life because he is no longer a part of ONLY one religion like the beginning of his life/book. Now he is a Hindu, Christian, and a Muslim. He's also moved in life because he has met new people that have taught him things and informed him about things that will change not only his life but his future family as well. These people are his parents, teaching him the dangers in life and raised him to be a Hindu, Mamaji, who taught him how to swim, Mr. Kumar his biology teacher the atheist, Father Martin the Christian, Mr. Kumar the Muslim/baker,etc.

Pi will miss allot about India but there are things he will miss the most. He's gonna miss the zoo he grew up in and the animals he grew up with, the crowds of people that would come to visit. He will miss his town, Pondicherry of course it's like leaving San Diego and living in China the rest of your life. He is leaving behind all his memories trapped in the beast's cages in the Hindu temples, his school, and most of all his home

    ReplyDelete
  23. Pi is going to miss a lot about India. India is where he grew up in, where he has many memories, and where his religion started. I think he will miss the 3 "churches" on the hills because he loved each religion and they were also so close together so he could have easy access to them.

Another thing he is going to miss is the zoo. He grew up in it and it was the one place where he could just relax and look back on things. He is gong to miss the comfort the zoo gave him, the one place where he could go if he needed to calm down or just to look around. In India he knew their language and even though he knows english I think it will be a change learning the terms in english.

  24. Pi has moved/ changed alot from when he was first introduced in the book. He was hindu, and only hindu in the beginning. He praised the hindu gods and went to the temple every so often. After time passed, he had the chance to learn about other religions and things like that. So now he is Muslim,Hindu, and Christian. Alot of new people helped him with his perspective on life too. for such, mr.kumar, his parents, Mammaji, Father Martin, etc.etc.

I also agree with other people he will most deffintly miss the zoo. He grew up there, thats where he lived his entire life, and now he has sold it. I think he will always remember the zoo, and all the animals, and everything it has taught him.. It will be missed,

    ReplyDelete
  25. Pi has moved by learning a bout other religons and growing up because he has become alot more religous than he has been before. I think pi will miss the zoo the most because his whole life has been living at the zoo and he will never see the zoo again.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Pi used to be a normal boy who didn't have much thought about different religions. I think the way he has changed/moved is by knowing more about religion ad having the intentions to learn about religions he never knew about or didn't know anything about it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think he is going to miss his old house and the smell of what he used to own. He is going to miss his friends and his friends family and his parents friends. He is going to miss his animals that he is going to sell to other zoos when they move, and probably his mass assortment of Priest.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I believe people move to, look/find better opportunities. Yes tey will miss and long their old home but, they will also learn to blend in and bond with their new community. Hes ready and he left for a good purpose.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Pi has gained more faith in god and became more religious. He will miss his friends and the security of his own home. He will probably miss his teachers too. I think he's gonna miss the zoo the most. Considering he grew up there.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Pi has moved and changed a lot since the beginning of the novel. He has learned a lot more about other religions. He now follows Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam. Pi was a lot more curious and immature as a child. He considered himself a Hindu because that's how he was raised, however not until he actually started to try different practices from Hinduism did he really know as much about the religion and now he is older and follows three religions which each of them he practices.

I think Pi will miss all the people the most. He has become close with a lot of them, including his teacher, Mr. Kumar. Mr. Kumar taught Pi a lot and really opened his eyes to everything around him. It will most likely be pretty hard for Pi to say good bye to him.

    ReplyDelete
  31. i think he is going to miss alll of the places and family/friends that he had and people move cause they need to discover new places and learn need things and thats all -dannny

    ReplyDelete
  32. Pi has changed throughout the book by...

    1. Has gathered many religions
    2. Met new people that have taught him things that he will never forget
    3. He has learned to not be influenced by his parents (who don't agree with)and others.

I think that he Pi will most likely miss the zoo, his friends, the temples/church and his teachers. Because these things have formed his life into something he enjoys.

    ReplyDelete
  33. How has Pi's character "moved" or changed throughout the first part of the novel? What is Pi going to miss most about India?
Pi has moved on by the way he has thought of what other people say about how he wants to change about religion. So I think he just want to be alone and he just wanted to move on and do it hes way.Pi is going to miss his family to care and to believe him and he will miss the couple of friends he has that care for him.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Pi has become wiser throughout the book.He has learned more about himself through religion, and I think he has almost found himself. I think that is one of the main concepts of the book, pi trying to find out who he is.

I think Pi is going to miss India because it's where he has grown up its what he knows, its what he remembers. Leaving is hard enough for him but going to Canada? That's going to be like going to another planet for him.

    ReplyDelete
  35. He has changed a lot since the beggining considering he is a christian, scientist, hindu, and muslim. I think he is going to miss his parents and mister kumar and father martin the most because they kind of helped him turn into who he is now.

    ReplyDelete
  36. In Pi's early life hes changed his religions and his way of thinking, he went from a good Hindu boy to a good Christian boy then to a Muslim while still practicing each religion and following each one and now hes also changing his life by leaving to Canada which is a big move. He's leaving his friends, the zoo, the churches, the three wise men, Hes leaving everything from India and moving away to Canada to start a new life. I think Pi will miss the zoo out of everything the most. Hell miss the lions waking him up in the morning and all the animals having an effect on his life. He seemed to enjoy talking about the animals alot.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Pi has changed by becoming more religious and becoming more intelligent as time continues. He has changed because now he realizes he can like multiple religions if he wants and he's not going to let anyone stop him. He becomes for a short while because he feels that he's doing something wrong but deep down he understands that learning these different religions make him happy so he's going to stay happy by doing things to make him happy.

I think Pi is going to miss his teachers the most. He has connected with them and will be sad that he wont be able to see them again. He will miss his friends and he'll miss the church/ temples most of all. All of his prayers going away forever.

    ReplyDelete
  38. He has seen a lot of different beliefs and is kinda confused on what he wants to follow.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think that Pi throughout the first part of the novel in many ways. One of them is by learning about all kinds of different religions. The three religions all have their own world veiws and he has gotten all of them, so now they all kind of morphed into his world veiw now.

Pi will probably miss thw zoo the most. When you grow up with somthing always being there, then one day you move to Canada and its not, your going to miss it. I think that observing the animals has really helped him understand the world better.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Pi has had many encounters with religion. Threw these encounters he has learned it is okay to worship more than one god. He probly will see the world in a differnt perspective now because of his beliefes.

I think pi will miss school the most from india. It said he loved to learn and he had very strong connections with his teachers

    ReplyDelete
  41. He has moved throughout the novel by being 3 different religions, being baptized, getting a prayer rug and practicing Islamic. he has so many different points of views for so many totally different things.
He is definitely going to miss the zoo the most because he loves going there and loves all the animals there.
