Quote #2

[Pi:] "Why would God wish that upon Himself? Why not leave death to the mortals? Why make dirty what is beautiful, spoil what is perfect?

Love. That was Father Martin's answer." (Ch 17)

Why does Pi struggle to understand the Christian "Story"? How is he affected by the interactions he has with Father Martin?

  1. He struggles because he is so use to all of the stories in the Hindu religion instead it is one story period! He now wants to be a christian because well father martin has "influinced" him to become christian.

  2. Love is one thing and religion is another.

Pi struggles to relize why someone would give up something so "perfect" just because of love. well maybe its because God would rather take the blame upon himself instead of putting it on us "mortals." His interactions with father martin have been so meaningful that the Christian religion begins to interest him therefore causeing him to "become" part of the Christian religion.

  3. Pi struggles because, in his religion he has many many stories and many many gods. And here was this guy who said there is only one god and one story. This quote taken from chapter 17 shows his thoughts and confushion about it.
"I had never heard of a hindu god dying. Brahman reveiled did not go for death. Devles and monsters did, as did mortals by the thousands and millions-thats what they were there for."Pi is so used to having multipl gods and thousands of stories that the idea of cristinanity is strange to him. Other than that Pi is affected by that saying
"love."I think he thought that there was more to the picture than that. When Pi asks Father Martin that he wants to be a christian Father Martin says
"you already are Piscine-in your heart. Who ever meets Christ in good faith is a Christian. And here in Munnar you met Christ."I think these words had an effect on Pi that showed him the diffrance in this religion than in others.

  4. He struggles to understand because he grew up in a religion were gods are so powerful that even in human form they cannot die. This became apparent when he said "When push came to shove, he transcended his limited human frame with strength no man could have and weapons no man could handle. That is a god as a god should be." He is affected by his interactions with father Martian in that he realizes that christianaty is a very understanding religion

  5. I think Pi struggles to understand that instead of a god, just being all powerful and mighty, this time a god was in a human form, and came down to show love to the people. He did such things show how loyal he was, and how much he cared for his creation. So, his meetings with Father Martin, got him curious and wild up, he got excited about this new information Father Martin was giving. And by the end he was totally caught in the religion, and wished to practice it.

  6. When Father Martin tells Pi the Christian "story", he struggles with the idea that God sacrificed himself and still was God. That is because in the religions that he has encountered in his life some far, death has always been imminent only for mortals. Not gods or goddesses who supposedly live forever. He also doesn't grasp why God/Jesus, would sacrifice himself out of love, which drove him to find flaws with him being a god. However, the more he interacts with Father Martin, the less he wants to "leave" Him, and the more he wants to be a Christian.

  7. Pi struggle because he does not get why their god would let himself die. Pi believes that only mortals should die but god love mortals so much he actually wanted to like a mortal. Father Marten affected pi because he told Pi how much god loved mortals and Pi respected that.

  8. Pi struggles to grasps this idea of a god dying because in all the Hindu stories. The god is powerful, and puts himself on the top rank, has people to die for him. Gods in Hindu stories are always too strong or too needed/wanted to sacrifice themselves. He doesn't get that "Love" is pretty much what Christianity is about. Pi is also confused about the idea of all the stories in the bible leading up to the one big story of Jesus on the cross.
"I asked for another story, one that I might find more satisfying. Surely this religion had more than one story in its bag-religions abound with stories. But Father Martin made me understand that the stories that came before it-and there were many-were simply prologue to the Christians."

I think that Pi appreciates that when he first saw Father Martin, he was ready to listen to ones stories/problems with love. And this gave Pi a sense of love and peace although he was first surprised when he saw this.
"The vestibule had clean, white walls; the table and benches where of dark wood; and the priest was dressed in a white cassock-it was all neat, plain, simple. I was filled with a sense of peace. But more than the setting, what arrested me was my intuitive understanding that he was there-open, patient-in case someone, anyone, should want to talk to him; a problem of the soul, a heaviness of the heart, a darkness of the conscience, he would listen with love." <-- Amazing.

Pi was also influenced be Father Martin because when Father Martin told Pi about the story and answered questions over tea he kind of got Jesus (or Him) stuck in Pi's head.
"I couldn't get Him out of my head. Still can't. I spent three solid days thinking about Him. The more He bothered me, the less I could forget Him. And the more I learned about Him, the less I wanted to leave Him."

    1. The simplicity of it all is probably my favorite part. I'm really glad you included the vestibule description...well done.

  9. I think Pi struggles because he dosn't fully understand the Christian story. Pi is new at all this information, and just needs to hear more of the story. Pi also probably struggles understanding the Christian story because the christian god will sacrifice his life, and the Hindu religion their god wouldn't let his self die. I think Pi expected his religion to have about the same story as each other. I don't think Pi was expecting a whole nother story. Pi dosn't get that the Christian story is basically all about Love. Pi was affected by Father Matrin because, he told Pi all about Jesus and his life. Pi didn't quite know the whole story about Jesus, and what happend to him.

  10. "The gods of Hinduism face their fair share of the vies, bullies, kidnappers, and usurpers. What is the Ramayana but the account of one long, bad day for Rama? Adversity, yes. Reversals of fortune, yes. Treachery, yes. But humiliation? Death? I could't imagine Lord Krishna consisting to be stripped naked, whipped, mocked, dragged through the streets and, to top it off, crucified- at the hands of mere humans, to boot. I'd never heard of a Hindu god dying."

Pi struggles to understand the Christian story because he's not used to gods dying. In the Hindu stories the gods are powerful and strong, whereas in the Christian story God is crucified and humiliated by human beings you would think that since Jesus is a god he's immortal but in the story Jesus dies by being crucified on the cross.

"Even Rama, that most human of avatars, who had to be reminded of his divinity when he grew long-faced over the struggle to get Sita, his wife, back from Ravana, evil king of Lanka, was no slouch. No spindly cross would have kept him down. When push comes to shove, he transcended his limited human frame with strength no man could have and weapons no man can handle. That is God as God should be. With shine and power and might. Such as can rescue and save and put down evil. This Son, on the other hand, who goes hungry, who suffers from thirst, who gets tired, who is sad, who is anxious, who is heckled and harassed, who has to put up with followers who don't get it and opponents who don't respect Him- what kind of a god is that? It's a god on too human a scale that's what."

Pi gets more and more frustrated when the answer to all of his questions is "Love". Pi just doesn't get it.

"I couldn't get Him out of my head. I still can't. I spent three solid days thinking about Him. The more He bothered me, the I could forget Him. And the more I learned about him, the less I wanted to leave Him."

That quote is saying how Pi is getting interested by this Lord and his story the more and more he tries to figure out why.

    LOVE.

That answer struct Pi because of the fact that a god would go to people and let them kill him out of Love. He just couldn't wrap his head around that fact, which made him want to learn more and become Christian.

  11. "The first thing that drew me in was disbelief .What?Humanity sins and God's Sn pay the price?"

Pi struggles with the christian "Story" because he cant understand why a God dies for what the people that pray upon him instead of for the mortals take the fall.He also doesn't seem to understand why Jesus would be a person someone would looked up to because he went threw all the most tragic of things that he shouldn't have because he is the Son of God.He ask how God would have his own son die.All through Pi's life he has known for a god to be the most powerful and nothing can bring that god down Like how he says "Divinity should not blighted by death. Its wrong. The world soul cannot die, even in on contained parts of it."

"I couldnt get Him out of my head. Still cant. I spent three solid days thinking about Him. The more He bothered me, the less I could forget Him.. And the more I learn about Him, the less I wanted to leave Him."

Pi is really effected by the conversations he had with Father Martin by having a new eye of things. And craved to learn more and more about all these different kinds of religions that he has came across. All because of this one different experience he is more open to learn something different.

  12. Pi has gotten use the idea of gods not sacrificing themselves for the mortals. The idea of god sacrificing his son to make up for the humans sins opposed to the humans offering gifts to make good with god seems so alien to him and he thinks that a god should not lower himself to human standards.

"He folded his handstogether on the table and sat there, his expression serene, showing neither expectation nor resignation".

when Pi met father Martin he was introduced to a true loving person and when he asked the question why not let the mortals die and his answer was love as well the other questions he was not sure how to digest this. It seems like he really drilled love into Pi, and he took that and held it.

  13. In Hinduism all the gods are so powerful and would never be able to be "defeated" by humans so when Pi hears a story that says God was beaten and nailed against a cross by his choice it kind of struck him because in Hinduism all the gods are shown with such power and authority that he couldn't imagine a god sacrificing so much for human beings. I think the interactions with Father Martin have not only inspired him to become a christian but also opened Pi's eyes to spread out in his religious views. Talking to Father Martin made him hear a different religious story (other than the ones he has heard about Hinduism) and he fell in love with that story so I think he thought, well other religions must have good stories too I just haven't heard them cause I've always focused on studying Hindu. Which made him curious to find out more about other religions, to see if he liked any of their stories. I think that's partially why Pi went to go find out more about other religions.

  14. Pi struggles to answer this question because he was born a Hindu and was growing up with Hinduism so the fact that for the son of god to pay for the things that humans did made no sense to him. He also couldn't take the fact that God wasn't powerful like the Hindu gods.

All of this was new to Pi. The whole thing that there was only one Story, the son of God died for us out of love, and how the Christian religion was simple. Pi wasn't used to this at all.

Pi was used to never ending adventurous stories, powerful gods, and a temple that was not simple what so ever. This is why Pi struggles to understand the Christian "Story".

  15. I think that Pi struggles to understand the Christian "Story" because that is not the same as the religion he already knew and that gave "the original landscape of his religious imagination", Hinduism. How they one had one God to the many God(s) he already knew. That the all powerful God would wish that upon himself and not the mortals (humans). I think what was more difficult was hearing that Love was the answer to ALL his questions he had.I think what affected him was when he asked Father Martin if he to could become a Christian Father Martin said he already was. Which I think made Pi think that all he wanted to do was Love God.

  16. I think he struggles to understand the Story because he grew up on a Hindu faith which believes that all of the gods are all- powerful.

  17. "Any Hindu god could can do a hundred times better. This son spends most of his time telling stories, talking."

Pi struggles with the Christan story because unlike Hindu gods Jesus dosen't do anything crazy amazing. Pi is used to gods that are powerful and huge not ones who care about human beings and try to help them. Hearing the christan story confuses him and
Father Martin's answers aren't very helpful.

"Love. That was Father Martin's answer"

Honestly I don't think Pi has ever heard love in his religion to this point. In the Hindu religion you never hear "Braham Loves you".But in Christanity thats all you hear. I think learning about Chritianity changed Pi's life because he learned about the different meanings in every religions stories. In the Christian story it was love.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think that Pi struggles to anticipate cristianity, because he has lived his entire life with hindu gods "that can do a hundred times better". When he hears love as an only and singular answer, I ame suprised that he doesn't havea more dramatic reaction.

    ReplyDelete
  19. He doesn't understand why god would send his own son to die for the people. He has been taught that people are lesser beings than god's. He is used to people sacrificing for gods not gods sacrificing for people. I think Pi was confused by love from the gods not love to the gods.
He is influenced by Father Martin because of how god loves the people and would even sacrifice for the people. He likes this so much he is a Christian now and likes it and believes in it.

  20. "This Son, on the other hand, who goes hungry, who suffers from thirst, who gets tired, who is anxious, who is heckled and harassed, who has put up with follows who don't get it and opponents who don't respect Him- what kind of god is that?"

Pi is confused by The Story. There is only one? He wants to hear something different. In Hinduism there is more than one story, in fact there is millions! Of course he is confused by the Christian religion, it's brand new to him. It's expected for him to struggle to understand it.
"Any Hindu god can do a hundred times better."

When Father Martin is explaining the story Pi constantly keeps coming up with questions. He's tired of hearing about Jesus, and he wants another story. He asks what's the point to this "Amazing" story, and he keeps getting the same answer: Love. Love is a big part of Christianity. I've never heard of love in Hinduism. Pi thinks the people are suppose to serve and love the God. Why would a God actually love the people? Or better yet, why would he sacrifice himself for others?

    Christianity is about Love.

  21. Pi is startled. As a child he had been around with the Hinduism religion. Their gods all very mighty and powerful, defending themselves. When father Martin told Pi the story he just couldn't believe it. A god that has "chosen" his son to give up his life. He couldn't understand that he had done it for LOVE. Pi had never heard of a Hindu god dying. He wanted another story. He thinks it's wrong to what they did to Jesus Christ, because it is.

"it's a god on too human scale, thats what".
Pi can't see a god being mistreated, humiliated, beaten, and most of all killed. Christianity is much different from Hinduism and Pi is slowly starting to realize how different religions are.

  22. Why does Pi struggle to understand the Christian "Story"? How is he affected by the interactions he has with Father Martin?
Pi has confusing moments with father martin because he needed to get used to the story of why god died and why he loved everyone he can he gave faith to the world and love and that's what father martin was trying to show pi

    ReplyDelete
  23. Since Pi is so used to the hindu religion where there are many stories and many gods it doesn't fit in well with christianity for example in chapter 17 he says, "I had never heard of a hindu god dying. Brahman reveiled did not go for death. Devles and monsters did, as did mortals by the thousands and millions-thats what they were there for." He was confused of how christianity had only one god and one story where in hinduism theres a million and for every question father martin had the same answer which was always "Love." So the more he thinks about the belief the more he can't get it out of his head. Once he gets all these feelings in him about Christianity which father martin gave him when they interacted, he later goes to him and says, "Father Martin I want to be christian." and father martin said "you already are Piscine-in your heart. Who ever meets Christ in good faith is a Christian. And here in Munnar you met Christ." And I think thats when Pi decided to follow christian beliefs.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think that the reason Pi was having a hard time believing what father Martin was saying, was because in Hinduism all the gods are so powerful, and would never be beat. Since that was not the case. He didn't know if the story was true or not.
What he was getting was not what he wanted to hear. He wanted to hear something else. To him it was hard to believe that a God decides to give up his life for us. Pi kept asking why God did what be did and he kept getting the same answer, LOVE because he LOVES us.

    ReplyDelete
  25. "I have never heard of a Hindu god dying."

I think Pi is having a hard time understanding why a god would be beaten, humiliated, and killed. Pi is struggling at understanding the "Christian" story because, his religion, hinduism, has millions of gods, and christianity only has one. Pi is also probably very puzzled by why Father Martin answers "love" to everyone of his questions about christianity. It was expected that Pi would feel this way about Christianity at first, but soon he will probably understand.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think the reason pi was so surprised that a god would die for the the people was because this was all new to him. Hinduism he is so use to the teachings he is incorporating it into his belief in other religions. I Hinduism gods are powerful and there are many. He couldn't believe that the god didn't do anything. He also dosen't understand why someone so great would die for love.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Pi struggles to understand that their is only story about one god supported by smaller stories because, Hinduism is almost the complete opposite. In Christianity the one god dies of hate. He dies a weak man frowned upon. In Hinduism there are many gods, very powerful gods, much too important to die. There is also more than one story. There are big stories for each god.

Pi reacts calmly (at first) and listens to what father martin has to say because that is what he does. He sits there waiting for someone with a problem to come in need of assistance and ready to listen. So, Pi sits there silently listening to the story Father martin has to tell.

    ReplyDelete
  28. He is having trouble understanding that this time the god sacrificed his life for his creation and not the other way around, all because of LOVE.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Pi just doesn't understand the beautiful concept of "Love" because he is used to improving 'yourself' to become something better, not risking dangerous things like being put to death for a claim that you made or being put in jail for a deed that other people disagreed with. These things don't prove themselves to be pure to Pi, and therefore he never thought of thinking light of it as "Love," even though taking sacrifices for others can be a very deep and personal symbol of "Love" for others.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think because its way different from his religion and their is only one God to worship instead of a lot.
"I want to Love God" He thinks its a unique religion but it seems like he is committed to being a christian.

    ReplyDelete
  31. He struggles because he doesn't understand why He would suffer for people who accused him for no reason. He doesn't see why he would go through the pain for people who don't believe. He was also struggling because his religion is not the same as Christian religion. Hindu gods don't suffer, and they don't show weakness. It was also his first time learning Christianity, so it was a lot to take in.

Sine Father Martin was so faithful and willing to tell Pi a story of Jesus Christ, Pi became more and more interested.

    ReplyDelete
  32. He doesn't understand because it's a new story from a new religion and won't understand that Jesus died for our sins, but Pi believes that God let his son be killed. He still doesn't understand WHY God let him die.

    ReplyDelete
  33. He doesn't understand because the Hindu gods are opposite of Jesus Christ, he had never heard of a god dying, this was preposterous to him. This was as foolish as Pi's father feeding him to the lions because they were eating everyone and everything else. At least in Pi's eyes. After many days of drinking tea and eating biscuits with Father Martin he finally realized that the son of god's (Jesus) love for humanity, and that this was definitely enough of a story for all Christians and Pi.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Pi doesnt understand the christian story because god let Jesus die and he doesnt understand because he's from a different religion that why he doesnt understand

    ReplyDelete
  35. he doesnt unferstand that god had to let jesus die because he is not from this religion and he jest belive in god but he does not no what religion he is

    ReplyDelete
  36. Pi is just having a hard time processing this information. Because from his original religion, Hindu, there was multiple gods that only believed in more spiritual things and are almost the opposite of Jesus Christ. However he just learned about Christianity which is based off of Jesus dying for peoples sins, because he loves us. I think Pi just is't use to listening to a religion based off of love.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Pi stuggles with the christian story because he is confused why a god would be mocked at and hung on a cross. pi also thinks that a god should be all powerful and beable to banish evil and bring peace. pi begins to understand christianity because father martin said that the story is about love.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think he struggled with it because he was already a Hindu and didn't think about trying many religions at the same time. He was thinking like everyone else that knows about Pi's mass assortment of religions, and they think that Pi should stick to one religion and practice it each day

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think Pi has a such a hard time understanding the Christian story because he was raised a Hindu and before Christianity that was all he knew about religion. Pi at first was very confused about why the Christian god had to suffer like the people because in Hinduism the god's never had to suffer or sacrifice like they do in Christianity.

Pi's interactions with Father Martin affected him deeply. He was moved by the things he took from their conversation and could not get Jesus Christ off his mind. Everything him and Father Martin talked about inspired Pi to follow Christianity and become a Christian.

    ReplyDelete
  40. He struggles to understand because he doesn't understand the concept of the story, how god has undying love for his children, that's why he gave his son for the world, after he learned the concept he started to understand Christianity.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Pi struggles with the story because it doesn't make sense to him. God should be immortal. Why would any being choose to die or to have his son die? Hindu Gods are not that way. Suffering is not what makes them great.

Father Martin's story affected Pi because of the differences between Hinduism and Christianity. Since Pi was interested in the story, Father Martin said he was already Christian. How cool was that! Pi did not have to do anything and he was already Christian! So he could be both Christian and Hindu. It was a great buffet of religions and he could have them all.
